they could have an amazing, closer-than-close, warm and loving and supportive relationship without the sex

Yes, yes, yes. Because if they don't have that, then it isn't love, is it? It's sex. Maybe very friendly and compatible sex, but still just two bodies getting it on. To me, they have that relationship on screen and in canon. You can add the sex and slash, but only because the relationship is there underneath. The sex is... the chocolate syrup on the ice cream. Ice cream is wonderful all by itself. In fact, some flavors are better without chocolate syrup.

Now I want dessert... butter pecan ice cream. Nom nom.

Anyway, yes, I wanted to show the guys as honorable adults. Damn it, John is an officer, honor does mean something to him. His problems with authority are all when authority isn't honorable. And Rodney isn't a spineless weasel who would cheat on someone he loved and swore to cleave to, either. I don't consider that Kim or Jennifer 'cheated' either. They moved on, it wasn't furtive or sneaky, and Jennifer would have divorced Rodney in absentia except she cared too much to let the IOA snag what had mattered so much to him.

I wonder... would many fans have considered it a happy ending if both guys had happily fallen into the arms of their SOs and never got together? Because it would to me.
